Childhood Cancer Warrior Spotlight: Drake

In the words of his mother

July is Sarcoma Awareness Month.
Most people have never heard of clear cell sarcoma.
Neither had we.
Until one day, it became the word that changed our lives forever.
This is Drake.
Before cancer, he was the boy who never met a stranger. The kid whose laugh could fill an entire room. The one who loved so deeply that he would give away everything he had if it meant someone else smiled. He has always had the biggest heart of anyone I’ve ever known.
When he was little, he was obsessed with Brave. He couldn’t quite say Merida, so everywhere we went it was, “Merita… Merita… Mom, I like Merita. She’s so pretty. She’s so nice. She loves her brothers.”
That is who Drake has always been.
Kind.
Compassionate.
Brave.
The best big brother.
The child who worried more about everyone else than himself.
Then, in 2024, our world fell apart.
For months we searched for answers while our son slowly slipped away in front of us. He had unexplained fevers. Night sweats. Exhaustion. Pain. He was losing weight. His skin became pale. His blood counts kept dropping. He needed iron infusions. He needed blood transfusions.
We knew something was terribly wrong.
We fought to be heard.
Eventually, imaging revealed what no parent is ever prepared to hear.
A 9-centimeter tumor in his colon.
Our healthy, active little boy had an incredibly rare cancer called Clear Cell Sarcoma of the Gastrointestinal Tract, a cancer so rare that many physicians will never see a single case during their entire career.
One surgery changed our lives forever.
We hoped that would be enough.
It wasn’t.
Despite clear surgical margins, the cancer came back.
This time it had spread to his liver.
Then another lesion.
Then another.
And another.
We went from counting lesions… to losing count.
Today, Drake has more than 20 tumors throughout his liver, a lesion in his pancreas, and another concerning lesion in his spine. There is no standard treatment for this disease. There is no cure. Every appointment, every scan, every lab result feels like another battle we never asked to fight.
His current treatment isn’t meant to cure him.
It is meant to buy him time.
Time.
Something every family takes for granted until it’s suddenly all you can think about.
Every birthday.
Every holiday.
Every baseball game.
Every family dinner.
Every laugh.
Every hug.
Every “I love you.”
They all become priceless.
Cancer has stolen so much from Drake.
It has stolen his energy.
His childhood.
His ability to simply be a teenager.
Instead of worrying about homework, football games, or hanging out with friends, he spends his days in hospitals, MRI machines, CT scanners, PET scans, blood draws, medications, and treatments that leave him exhausted.
But here’s what cancer hasn’t stolen.
It hasn’t stolen his heart.
Drake still worries about other children in the hospital.
He still smiles at nurses.
He still thanks every person who cares for him.
He still dreams about becoming a police officer or serving in the military one day.
He still finds ways to make everyone around him laugh.
Even while fighting for his own life, he somehow continues to lift up everyone else’s.
Recently, he was named an Honorary Deputy by the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, a moment none of us will ever forget. Watching his grandfather pin that badge on him reminded us that while cancer may have changed his body, it will never define who he is.
Drake is so much more than a diagnosis.
He is a son.
A brother.
A friend.
A protector.
A leader.
A fighter.
A light.
Sarcoma accounts for only about 1% of adult cancers and around 15% of childhood cancers, yet funding and research remain dramatically underfunded compared to many other cancers.
Families like ours desperately need more research.
More clinical trials.
More treatment options.
More hope.
Because no parent should ever be told that there are no curative options left for their child.
No child should have to fight this hard just to grow up.
If Drake’s story reaches even one person today, I ask you to do three things:
💛 Share his story.
💛 Learn about sarcoma.
💛 Help advocate for more research so that one day another family doesn’t have to hear the words, “There’s nothing else we can do.”
To every single person who has prayed for Drake, donated, shared our posts, sent a message, cooked a meal, or simply spoken his name…
Thank you.
You have carried our family through the darkest days of our lives.
Please continue to pray.
Pray that his treatment gives him more time.
Pray for breakthroughs in research.
Pray for every family walking this impossible road.
And if you remember nothing else from this post…
Remember Drake.
Not because he has cancer.
But because he has shown the world what courage, kindness, and unconditional love truly look like.
For Drake.
For every child fighting sarcoma.
Until there is a cure. 💛
