In Loving Memory of RJ
February 26, 2020 – April 15, 2026

It is with deep sadness that we share RJ, one of our beloved Cancer Warriors, has gained his angel wings.
RJ’s story is one of strength, resilience, and faith from the very beginning.
In August of 2022, RJ’s family first noticed swelling on his right cheek. What began as a small concern quickly became a long and difficult journey of unanswered questions, misdiagnoses, and escalating symptoms. When he began to limp and lose the ability to run, his mother continued advocating for him until they were finally led to Texas Children’s Hospital, where scans revealed a 4–5 cm tumor on his right jaw and cheek, with cancer cells that had spread to his skeletal system.
RJ began treatment on September 27, 2022.
In the midst of uncertainty, RJ’s family held tightly to their faith. There were moments of fear, but also moments of provision, timing, and what his family often described as God’s favor—being seen quickly by specialists, finding answers sooner than expected, and witnessing progress in RJ’s strength during treatment.
RJ’s journey was filled with both challenges and miracles—times of waiting, times of healing, and times of renewed hope. Through it all, he remained a strong little boy who continued to fight with courage far beyond his years.
We first met RJ at our Christmas Carnival in 2024, where his presence immediately stood out. He had a quiet joy and a spark that made it easy to see how deeply loved he was by his family and how much love he gave in return.
In 2025, we were honored to be part of making his final Christmas special. It was a day surrounded by joy, celebration, and the people who loved him most.
RJ also experienced Sky High Adventures that brought moments of childhood joy into a very real and difficult journey—like a night at a Houston Rockets game and a surprise trip to Buck N Buffalo Ranch in Lexington, Texas.
Buck N Buffalo Ranch Sky High Adventure
From Wednesday, March 25 through Saturday, March 28, RJ and his family spent time together at Buck N Buffalo Ranch in Lexington, Texas.
This stay was fully donated by ranch owners Ryan and Lauren McGowen, who provided lodging and groceries so the family could simply be together without worry or distraction.
RJ was there with his mom Ebony Kankam, dad Rich, siblings Quinn (3) and Noah (infant), Aunt Malachi, Aunt Mahogany, and Grandma Valencia Kankam.
During their stay, the family experienced peaceful, unhurried time together. RJ fished, visited the shooting range, and spent time outdoors taking in the quiet beauty of the ranch. He watched exotic animals—including zebras—from the porch, moments that brought wonder and calm in the middle of a heavy journey.
On Thursday, horses were brought onto the property by Danika Rice so RJ and his siblings could ride and interact with them. It was a day filled with joy, laughter, and simple childhood experiences that meant so much.
Sky High representatives Sherry LaPoint and MaryAnn Biesada were on site to support the family, alongside ranch hand Tyler, who helped guide them throughout their stay.
A Life Rooted in Faith, Love, and Courage
RJ’s life was marked by a fight that began long before most children ever have to understand what illness means. Through every stage of his journey, his family leaned on faith, community, and the belief that God was present in the details.
RJ brought joy into every space he entered. His life mattered deeply, and his story will continue to live on through his family, his memories, and the love that surrounds him.
We are honored to have known RJ, and we are grateful for every moment we were able to share with him.
